The Hodge Foundation is an exclusively grant-making charity based in Wales and does not raise funds from the public.

We award grants to UK registered or exempt charities for the purpose of supporting positive outcomes from a wide range of charitable activities conducted in the UK and overseas.

Our history

Sir Julian Hodge (1904 to 2004) was an entrepreneur, banker and philanthropist who set up three banks during his lifetime, as well as having a wider involvement in the business community in Wales and further afield. At its height in the 1970’s the Hodge Group was a conglomerate engaged in banking, finance, motor manufacturing, motor dealerships, cinemas, engineering, distribution and many other sectors, with over 5000 employees.

The Jane Hodge Foundation was established as a charity in 1962 and was launched with a gift of £2.5 million in commemoration of Sir Julian’s mother Jane. Subsequently, Sir Julian gifted the majority of his shares in his family company, The Carlyle Trust Limited, to the Foundation and the income from these shares now provides much of the funding used by the charity to support good causes.
